Allegheny College
STUDENT SURVIVORS
Title IX Options
Title IX is a nation wide policy that is enforced through government funding. The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) releases general regulations that institutions must follow. Each institution uses those guidelines to create their own policies. This page will provide a brief overview of what Title IX is nationally. Allegheny's policies, glossary, and information on reporting is available on their website, which is listed in the main menu.
Title IX policy uses the terms sex discrimination and sexual harassment to reference sexual violence. This policy covers ten total key areas, including sexual harassment, and is present in any institution that receives federal funding. This bill states,
"No person in the United Sates shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance".
It is important to note that Title IX serves to provide an equitable process for both the accused and accuser. This means Title IX is not supposed to be an advocate for survivors (see the Resources page for services that do). Through the investigation, the Title IX office looks for a violation of school policy, as well as for a pattern of behavior from any parties involved (i.e. if a student is named in multiple cases). They do not serve as survivor advocates.
